The way we experience the world is shaped by the stories we tell ourselves. Our imagination fills the gaps, connecting fragments of reality into a narrative that feels complete. But how often do we stop to question: Are those stories helping us, or holding us back in real life?

In hypnotherapy, I help people use their imagination—not to escape reality, but to reshape it. One of the most powerful questions I can ask is: How would it feel to achieve your goal in real life? It’s a question that invites you to dream, even when fear might be telling you not to.

Often, we’re scared to dream big. Not because we doubt our ability to succeed, but because deep down, we fear what success might demand of us. But here’s the thing: your imagination is already influencing your life, every moment of every day. The question is whether it’s working for you—or against you.

The Allegory of the Cave: Shadows of real life

In Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, prisoners are chained in darkness, unable to see the world directly. Their only glimpse of reality comes from flickering shadows cast on the wall in front of them. These shadows become their truth. With no way of knowing otherwise, they create stories to explain the patterns of light and shade.

Now, imagine being one of those prisoners. You can’t turn around. The only world you know is a projection—a distorted reflection of real life. What stories might you create to make sense of those shadows? You could see gods, demons, or scenes of ordinary life. But here’s the thing: those stories would say more about your imagination than the actual world outside.

And this isn’t just an ancient parable. It’s exactly how our minds work.

Your reasoning brain—the part of you that interprets the world—is locked inside the “cave” of your skull. The only contact you have with reality is through your senses: sight, sound, touch, and so on. But there’s a delay. Information from your senses takes time to travel to your brain, and in the tiny gap between reality and perception, your imagination steps in. It starts filling the gaps, interpreting shadows, and shaping stories based on your fears, biases, and past experiences.

In hypnotherapy, this understanding is key. Those imagined “shadows” often drive anxiety, fear, and self-doubt. But with the right tools, we can step out of the cave, face the light, and see the world—and ourselves—more clearly.

The Finger Lock Experiment: The Power of Imagination

Let’s try a simple experiment together—a quick introduction to hypnosis that demonstrates just how powerful your imagination can be.

Hold your hand in front of you and point with one finger. Now, focus on that finger and imagine that all the bones inside it are fusing together. Start at the joint nearest your fingernail: imagine it locking solid, unable to bend. Then, move to the next joint, picturing it fusing tightly, and finally, imagine the knuckle where your finger meets your hand becoming completely immovable. Focus your attention on this idea—your finger is solid, fused, and stuck.

Now, try to bend your finger. You might find that you can’t—or that it feels strangely stiff.

What’s happening here? Your brain, when faced with a vivid imagined reality, prioritises it over the physical truth. It accepts the suggestion that your finger is fused, and for a moment, imagination takes control.

This is a simple yet powerful example of how the mind works—and how imagination can override even the most basic objective facts. In the hands of a competent, ethical hypnotherapist, this process can achieve wonderful, life-changing results. By harnessing the power of imagination, we can rewire patterns of thought and behaviour, unlocking your potential.

But this experiment is also a reminder of how easily imagination can work against us. Without guidance, the same mental processes that can inspire confidence and success can also fuel fear, anxiety, and self-doubt.

The Dark Side of Imagination: Disinformation and Manipulation

Imagination is a powerful force, but it can just as easily be used against us as for us. The same mental processes that allow us to envision success and positive change can also be manipulated to fuel fear, anxiety, and false beliefs. In the wrong hands, this power can influence individuals, communities, and even entire nations.

Let’s go back to the cave. Imagine two prisoners, their backs to the light, watching shadows flicker on the wall. One whispers, “That’s the king betraying everyone.” The other insists, “No, it’s the workers rising up to destroy everything.” Neither can see what’s really happening behind them. Their imagination fills the gaps with stories, driven by fear and bias.

Now, imagine those prisoners aren’t in a cave but scrolling through social media, reading headlines, or watching campaign ads. The same principle applies: disinformation preys on our natural tendency to fill in the blanks, twisting our imagination into a tool for manipulation.

Take the Brexit campaign of 2016 as an example. Bright, optimistic slogans promised £350 million a week for the NHS, conjuring images of shorter waiting times and better healthcare. But those slogans were paired with posters warning of invaders, threatening borders and livelihoods. The result? A carefully crafted narrative that bypassed rational thought and appealed directly to fear and bias. This is how imagination—when left unchecked—can be weaponised.

And this is where the role of a competent, ethical hypnotherapist becomes so important. Hypnosis, like imagination, is a powerful tool. In the hands of someone who prioritises your well-being, it can help you overcome limiting beliefs, quiet your fears, and achieve positive change. But it’s essential to recognise that the same principles can be misused by unscrupulous people to manipulate emotions and beliefs, both individually and on a societal scale.

The Stories Behind Phobias: When Imagination Turns Against Us

Phobias are one of the clearest examples of how imagination can work against us. Picture this: a six-foot-tall man sees a tiny money spider crawling across the floor—and screams. Is it really the spider itself causing the fear? Or is it the story his imagination has created about what the spider might do? The spider is, in all likelihood, harmless in real life, but his mind has turned it into something far more threatening.

Our minds are brilliant storytellers. They don’t just react to what’s in front of us—they fill in the gaps, often turning the smallest triggers into the biggest threats. The spider, rather than being just a small creature, becomes a source of danger. The fear isn’t rational; it’s a product of the mind’s ability to imagine the worst-case scenario and treat it as reality.

This same process plays out in other situations—like auditions. Imagine you’re preparing for a big opportunity, excited to showcase your talent. But as you walk into the audition room, your imagination kicks into overdrive. Suddenly, you’re picturing the casting director’s disappointed face, imagining yourself freezing or forgetting your lines. None of this has actually happened, but in that moment, it feels real. Your imagination has turned the audition into a scene of failure before it’s even begun.

In hypnotherapy, I help clients uncover these unconscious stories and see them for what they are—just stories, not facts. Whether it’s a spider, an audition, or public speaking, the fear often isn’t about the situation itself but about what your imagination tells you will happen. By identifying and reframing these narratives, we can turn imagination into an ally rather than an obstacle.

For example, in the case of auditions, hypnosis can help you quiet the catastrophising thoughts and replace them with constructive, empowering ones. Instead of picturing embarrassment or failure, you might vividly imagine walking into the room with calm confidence, connecting with your material, and delivering a performance you’re proud of. This isn’t about pretending everything will go perfectly—it’s about using the same imagination that once hindered you to set yourself up for success in real life.

The same principle applies to any fear or anxiety. The stories we tell ourselves often dictate how we feel. But with the right guidance, those stories can change—and so can the outcomes.

Take Control of Your Story

Your imagination is a powerful tool—it can hold you back with fear and doubt, or it can propel you forward with confidence and clarity. The stories you tell yourself don’t have to control you. With the right support, you can rewrite those narratives, overcome your fears, and achieve your goals.

If you’re ready to harness the power of your imagination to create positive, lasting change, let’s work together. As a qualified, ethical hypnotherapist, I can guide you through the process, helping you turn your imagination into your greatest ally.
